The original boundaries were from the Town of Payson boundaries East to Milepost 259 on Hwy 260. It included all the private lands except the Lion Springs area, located South of Hwy 260. This area later annexed into the fire district. The Town of Payson would later expand their boundaries East to the private lands of the district. This would take the forest service lands located North and South of hwy 260 away. This area would later became the Rim Golf Course and Chaparral Pines Subdivision. The newly formed fire district made an agreement with the Payson Fire Department to provide fire services to the newly formed fire district until they could get enough funding and equipment to start providing service. The first Board of Directors was establish and an organizational Fire Chief appointed. In March, 1982 Jim Idoine was appointed by the Board to be the first Volunteer Operational Fire Chief and charged with putting together an operating fire department. The first formal training meeting was held in June, 1982. This first meeting was held in the building being built on Milky Way, Star Valley with 9 members present. With no roof on the building, no firefighting experience and no pay, the group quickly came together to do what was needed. This was soon to change with a lot of hard work to complete the 1,600 square foot fire station, purchase our first fire truck and get training and being ready to start responding. With the building completed by the volunteer firefighters, our first fire truck was purchased. A 1963 Ford FMC truck was put into service, designated as Engine 8 and we could now start firefighter training. The fire department went operational November 1, 1982 with the nine firefighters showing a lot of heart and dedication to their community. The only thing that this new department responded to was fires. No medical, vehicle accidents or special needs, just structure and brush fires. Just 22 days after starting operations, we had our first response for a house fire. The fire was put out with an estimated 50 gallons of water by the crew from Engine 8 before backup from Payson Fire arrived on scene. It was fought from the outside in, as we had no breathing apparatus yet, that wouldn't come for almost two years and many fund raisers being held to raise the needed funds. We ran a total of 2 calls that first year and 13 calls the first full year of operation in 83. Several trucks were added over the next 6 years including a type 6 Brush Truck and 3,100 gallon Water Tender. In 1989, the board approved the ordering of our first new fire truck. The bid was awarded to Emergency One to build a type 1 Cyclone custom fire apparatus. This new truck would be all wheel drive, 1,250 gallon pump, 350 hp diesel engine with an automatic transmission, 500 gallons of water. The truck was delivered in June 1990 and responded on it's first call to the Dude Fire located on the Mogollon Rim, just North of the district. This fire became famous for being the largest fire at that time in Arizona history at 28,000 acres and killing 5 inmate firefighters and 1 inmate guard firefighter. This truck has responded on many major fires throughout the State of Arizona since then and is still in operation for us today. In August of 1991, Chief Idoine, after more than 9 years of service, tendered his resignation at the monthly board meeting and Captain Rick Hounshell was appointed by the Board to serve as Acting Fire Chief until the next board meeting in 30 days. At the next board meeting, Captain/Training Officer Gary W. Hatch was appointed to the Volunteer Fire Chief's position. Chief Hatch was one of the original members that attended the first meeting in 1982. On July 1, 1992 Chief Hatch became the first full-time employee for the district. That year the department responded to 47 calls for service, which now included full service EMT medical response, Fire and other services. In 1993 the fire department started providing Paramedic level response with our first four paramedics. Chief Hatch was the only paid of this group, the others were volunteer firefighter / Paramedics Peggy Hasty, Janet AJ O'Malley and Timothy O'Malley who also worked full-time as an Captain for the Phoenix Fire Department. In 1996 the new fire station located at 80 Walters Lane was started on a 1 1/2 acre parcel purchased by the fire district. It would take more than 3 years to complete the 6,780 square foot building. Most of the work was done by volunteer labor from the firefighters. Today, we have a fleet of five emergency apparatus and vehicles which respond to fires in the newly incorporated Town of Star Valley, Arizona and provide contract services to cover part of the Town of Payson. We also have Automatic Aid with both Payson Fire Department and Christopher Kohl's Fire District. We participate in the Gila County Fire Chief's Association Mutual Aid Agreement as well. Our current staff includes One Paid Chief, Three Paid Captain / Paramedics, One Paid Engineer / EMT, One Administrative Assistant and 15-20 Reserves. Our level of certifications has increased from 1990 having only one EMT and no state certified firefighters to today's staff of Paramedics, Intermediate EMTs, Firefighter II structural certified and Firefighter I & II wildland firefighters. Develop a Capital Improvement Program (CIP) that forecasts the needs for all capital expenditures in the future such as Facilities, apparatus, computer-related equipment, communications, safety and other capital equipment. The CIP would include planning for funding of capital expenditures. B. Develop a vehicle replacement schedule program that considers vehicle purpose, mileage, age and condition. C. Upgrading and expanding our existing data and communications infrastructure to meet the projected needs of the district as well as applicable regulations and standards. E. Acquire a records management and information system that integrates with all divisions/units. III. Human Infrastructure: Provide appropriate staffing levels, staff development, and educational opportunities to meet the needs of the District's internal and external customers. A. Develop a succession plan for all supervisory positions. B. Develop a career path for all positions. C. Develop a staffing level forecasting model that includes all aspects of district employee staffing. D. Provide quality training for new employees as well as continuing education opportunities for existing employees. IV. Manage Growth: Continue to address the area of managed growth using the considerations of forecasting, environmental scanning, legislative involvement, impacts of current levels of service and financial factors. Each one has its own level of response and purpose. The reason for AAA's is to increase the response to assist other agencies with handling fires / major EMS needs at a level higher than any one department can do on their own. This helps to provide a lower ISO (Insurance Services Organization) rating which relates to our homeowners amount they pay for insurance premiums. These two agreements are as follows: Payson Fire Department The AAA with the Payson Fire Department is a boundary drop type. This means the closest unit to the call responds, regardless of jurisdiction. This is modeled after the agreements between fire departments in the Phoenix Valley area. Under this agreement, Diamond Star Fire department units are automatically dispatched to all calls for fires in the Town of Payson. Payson units are automatically dispatched to all our fires. We also cover for each other if all the units in one jurisdiction are busy, then a unit from the other department will automatically be dispatched. This agreement saves countless funds for both agencies and provides for the best fire service available in the area. Also, the Diamond Star Fire Department currently provides protection services to the East side of Payson. The main areas under this contract are areas located off Hwy 260, which include Chaparral Pines and the Rim Golf Resort. We handle both fire and medical emergencies within these areas. Christopher Kohl's Fire District The AAA with the Christopher Kohl's Fire District is different than the agreement with the Payson Fire Department. Its main reason for existing is to reduce the time of dispatch for calls for assistance from either agency. This agreement will automatically send units that are requested, if they are available, without having to check with a chief officer of the requested jurisdiction, as is the case in a Mutual Aid Agreement. The Firewise Communities approach emphasizes community responsibility for planning in the design of a safe community as well as effective emergency response, and individual responsibility for safer home construction and design, landscaping, and maintenance. The national Firewise Communities program is intended to serve as a resource for agencies, tribes, organizations, fire departments, and communities across the U.S. who are working toward a common goal: reduce loss of lives, property, and resources to wildland fire by building and maintaining communities in a way that is compatible with our natural surroundings. In cooperation with local citizens and businesses, fuels reduction within and around the Town of Star Valley has gone into full swing. But first of all, what is the Wildland Urban Interface? The Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) is defined as: the area where structures and other human development meet or intermingle with the undeveloped wildland. The Urban Interface Fuels Reduction program has adopted "Firewise" practices, and our program is twofold. It relies heavily on the homeowner to maintain their property in a "Firewise" condition, and, relies on local contractors and Fire Department personnel to consult with the homeowner in ways that they can provide a survivable space. The Urban Interface Fuels Reduction crew has, to date, completed a 183-acre fire containment zone within the fire district and has treated 192 acres on private property. In addition to this, fuels specialists have performed 53 hazard severity assessments on private lands within the fire district, and hauled or burned over 9,250 cubic yards of brush from project sites and burned over 95,000 cubic yards of brush at the Blatner Pit. Another facet of the Urban Interface Fuels Reduction program is fire protection and suppression. During the past year, 2 new Type 6 (brush trucks) were built by the crew. We retrofitted our water tender with pump and roll capabilities as well as front spray bars. We responded to over 50 major National fires. Not only did this generate revenue for the Diamond Star Fire District, but also, the knowledge obtained from other agencies will help us in fighting local fires. An integral part of the program is education. In the past few months, we have integrated an aggressive Public Outreach Program. The Program is designed to "go to the public" to provide information to not only local residents, but businesses and civic organizations as well. Several public displays will be offered throughout the year. Local media will also be utilized to provide information to the public. The Public Outreach Program is currently writing a plan to take to the Town Council as well. What does this mean to the local homeowner, resident and the businesses of Star Valley? It means a lot of work. However, it also means a safer community in the long run. For information on this unit, please see last quarters newsletter. We have another engine coming which is a 1989 E-One Hush and with this unit, we will complete our improvements for our plan to provide better services and a lowered insurance cost to our homeowners in the district. The biggest news for this quarter is the planned merger of the Diamond Star Fire District and the Tonto Village Fire District. We started providing some essential services to the TVFD on April 1st of this year through an Inter Governmental Agreement (IGA). These services include a Fire Chief to provide leadership, planning and budgeting services, training and administrative services. Things are going very well with them and we are moving forward to make it permanent. We hope to have information ready for the public in January of 2008. The next planning meeting is October 29th at the Tonto Village Fire Station at 6:00 p.m. These meetings are open to the public. We will be holding formal meetings to inform the public of the benefits of a merger between the to fire districts and how it will effect them starting in January of next year. We will be taking delivery of our two new staff vehicles in mid November of this year. These will be Ford Crew Cab, 4x4's with the new 6.4lt diesel motors. We have several vehicles for sale at this time, so please check out our Items for Sale heading on our website. These include a 2006 F-450 Brush type truck, a 1995 Ford Explorer and soon to be listed will be a Ford F-350 Brush truck with CAFS. These units are being sold to make room for the additions to our apparatus fleet. This Quarters Safety Message: As we approach the use of fireplaces, heaters and heating stoves, please make sure your house has smoke detectors that are working properly. Replace the batteries once a year even if they are still working, as you don't want them to be out of service if a fire starts. Also, we recommend a CO detector if you are using wood or gas to heat your home. These can be purchased at many locations in the Star Valley and Payson stores. We have a firefighter 1 & 2 class going on at this time here at the station. The lead instructor is Captain Rick Heron from our agency, with many of the co-instructors also on our staff. This class runs until December and they meet Wednesday nights and all day Saturday of each week. This will provide many certified firefighters in the area for many of the fire departments that provide essential services to the Rim Area. We are continuing to provide FireWise inspections of property located within both the Diamond Star and Tonto Village fire district. We have done approximately 50% of the homes in the Thompson Draw 2 area of the Tonto Village Fire District and should have the remainder done by mid November. We are picking up brush that homeowners have cut and hauling it off. We are now using the Parley Pit on Control Road as well as the Blattner Pit on Hwy 260 for brush piles. We are starting our hiring process in November to place two new firefighters on the payroll by January 2008. We have many potential applicants from the department and should be able to have a two great additions to our crew. Our 2007-08 budget final rate has been set by Gila County and it is almost 5 cents less than projected in the budget process. This will help a little with the taxes paid for services. This new tax rate is down almost 9 cents from last years rate. I hope that all our efforts to provide among the best fire service that the Rim Area has to offer meets with all your expectations. Now is good time to start cleaning up around our homes in order to make them and our surrounding properties safer from wildfires. The Diamond Star Fire Department encourages every property owner to take a proactive approach to fire safety and to be Firewise when it comes to living with wildfires. Wildfires are and will continue to be a part of living in our beautiful community. Wildfires occur naturally each year and we must be prepared to minimize the negative effects they can have on our communities. The best thing we can do is to take steps to prepare our properties to have a better chance of surviving a wildfire, should it occur in our neighborhood. The Diamond Star Fire Department has been awarded grant matching funds for projects within the fire district that help to reduce the amount of hazardous vegetation in the district. Currently the fire department offers free Firewise assessments to aid property owners in identifying hazards around their homes and to develop a plan to mitigate those hazards. Free brush hauling and dumping is another service offered by the fire department. In some cases, the fire department may even be able to assist in cost sharing for projects on private property which thin or eliminate hazardous vegetation. We could not provide the current level of protection to our citizens if it were not for the people who have other careers and respond back to our calls as Reserves. A Reserve is paid per hour for their time on calls and at training meetings, with the base pay starting at Arizona State Minium Wages as set in January 2007. The rate goes up as additional certifications are added through training, i.e. EMT, Certified FF I & II, Intermediate EMT and Paramedic. Our Reserve program requires that each reserve be on call for a minimum of 72 hours per month. This is done by signing up for shifts to respond. If you live outside the boundaries of Star Valley, Arizona, you are eligible to participate, but it requires that you put in your 72 hours at the station or at one of the other firefighting staff's houses in the district. The pay is $ 1.00 per hour for this standby time and if a call comes in, then the time switches to your hourly pay until the call is completed. We currently have an outstanding group of Reserves and add to this list twice per year. If you are interested in applying to the position of Reserve, then please contact us or print an application and send it to our Office. We start the hiring process April 1st and October 1st of each year and it is completed within two months. No experience is necessary, but is helpful. If you are a Firefighter I & II or EMT and would like to get experience in firefighting, then we can provide you with that experience. Give us a try. The hiring process consist of an written exam based on general knowledge, not firefighting knowledge, an physical agility test to see that you are in good physical shape, an oral board of firefighters asking questions on why you want to work for our department, a physical exam with the departments own local doctor, a drug screen, a background check including finger printing, and a final interview with the Chief. Did you answer "NO" to any of the questions? If so, keep reading to learn the answers to the most common questions about lifesaving smoke alarms. Why should my home have smoke alarms? In the event of a fire, a smoke alarm can save your life and those of your loved ones. They are the single most important means of preventing house and apartment fire fatalities by providing an early warning signal--so you and your family can escape. Smoke alarms are one of the best safety features you can buy and install to protect yourself, your family and your home. Okay, where do I put them? Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including the basement. Many fatal fires begin late at night or in the early morning. For extra safety, install smoke alarms both inside and outside sleeping areas. Also, smoke alarms should be installed on the ceiling or above eye level on the walls. Since smoke and many deadly gases rise, installing your smoke alarms at the proper level will provide you with the earliest warning possible. Always follow the manufacturer's installation instructions. Where would I get smoke alarms? Many hardware, home supply or general merchandise stores carry smoke alarms. If you are unsure where to buy one in your community, call your local fire department (on a non-emergency telephone number) and they will provide you with some suggestions. Some fire departments offer smoke alarms for little or no cost. Are smoke alarms hard to install? Not a bit. In most cases, all you will need is a screwdriver. Many brands are self-adhesive and will automatically stick to the wall or ceiling where they are placed. However, be sure to follow the directions from the manufacturer because each brand is different. If you are uncomfortable standing on a ladder, ask a relative or friend for help. Some fire departments will actually install a smoke alarm in your home for you. Call your local fire department (again, on a non-emergency telephone number) if you have problems installing a smoke alarm. How do I keep my smoke alarm working? Smoke alarms are very easy to take care of. There are two steps to remember: 1. Simply replace the batteries at least once a year. Tip: Pick a holiday or your birthday and replace the batteries each year on that day. Some smoke alarms now on the market come with a ten-year battery. These alarms are designed to be replaced as a whole unit, thus avoiding the need for battery replacement. If your smoke alarm starts making a "chirping" noise, replace the batteries and retest it. 2. Keep them clean. Dust and debris can interfere with their operation, so vacuum over and around your smoke alarm regularly. What if the alarm goes off while I'm cooking? Then it's doing its job. Do not disable your smoke alarm if it alarms due to cooking or other non-fire causes. You may not remember to put the batteries back in the alarm after cooking. Instead, clear the air by waving a towel near the alarm, leaving the batteries in place. The alarm may have to be moved to a new location. How long will my smoke alarm last? About eight-to-ten years, after which they should be replaced. Like most electrical devices, smoke alarms wear out. You may want to write the purchase date with a marker on the inside of your unit. That way, you'll know when to replace it. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for replacement. Anything else I should know? Some smoke alarms are considered to be "hard wired." This means they are connected to the household electrical system and may or may not have battery backup. It's important to test every smoke alarm monthly. Assemble a Disaster Supplies Kit with items you may need if advised to evacuate. Store these supplies in sturdy, easy-to-carry containers such as backpacks, dufflebags or trash containers. Include: " A three-day supply of water (one gallon per person per day) and food that won't spoil. " One change of clothing and footwear per person and one blanket or sleeping bag per person. " A first aid kit that includes your family's prescription medications. " Emergency tools including a battery-powered radio, flashlight and plenty of extra batteries. " An extra set of car keys and a credit card, cash or traveler's checks. " Sanitation supplies. " Special items for infant, elderly or disabled family members. " An extra pair of eyeglasses. Keep important family documents in a waterproof container. Assemble a smaller version of your kit to keep in the trunk of your car. Creating A Disaster Plan Wildfire and other types of disasters--hurricane, flood, tornado, earthquake, hazardous materials spill, winter storm--can strike quickly and without warning. You can cope with disaster by preparing in advance and working together. Meet with your family to create a disaster plan. To get started Contact your local emergency management or civil defense office or your local American Red Cross chapter " Find out about the hazards in your community. " Ask how you would be warned. " Find out how to prepare for each type of disaster. Meet with your family " Discuss the types of disasters that could occur. " Explain how to prepare and respond to each type of disaster. " Discuss where to go and what to bring if advised to evacuate. " Practice what you have discussed. Plan how your family will stay in contact if separated by disaster " Pick two meeting places: 1. a place a safe distance from your home in case of a home fire. 2. a place outside your neighborhood in case you can't return home. " Choose an out-of-state friend as a "check-in-contact" for everyone to call. Complete these steps " Post emergency telephone numbers by every phone. Arial TUR Arial TUR( ( Carbon Monoxide "The Stealth Killer" What is Carbon Monoxide? Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless deadly gas. Because you can't see, taste, or smell it carbon monoxide can kill you before you know it's there. Today's more energy efficient, airtight home designs contribute to the problem by trapping CO-polluted air inside the home. Why is Carbon Monoxide so dangerous? The great danger of carbon monoxide is its attraction to hemoglobin in the bloodstream. CO is breathed in through the lungs and bonds with hemoglobin in your blood, displacing the oxygen which cells need to function. When CO is present in the air it rapidly accumulates in the blood. It will eventually displace enough oxygen in your system to suffocate you from the inside out, resulting in brain damage or death. Where does Carbon Monoxide occur? A common by-product of appliances that run on flammable fuel, carbon monoxide can be emitted by gas or oil furnaces, refrigerators or clothes dryers, water heaters, fireplaces, wood stoves charcoal grills, gas ranges and space heaters. A clogged chimney or improper venting can cause problems as well. It can even occur when wood ashes are stored inside. Who is at risk for Carbon Monoxide poisoning? Everyone is at risk. Carbon monoxide poisoning can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. Experts believe that vulnerability to CO poisoning increases for unborn babies, infants, senior citizens, and people with coronary or respiratory problems. These people are considered to be at greatest risk. How can I protect myself from Carbon Monoxide poisoning? The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends installing at least one carbon monoxide detector per household. Only install UL listed carbon monoxide detectors. Some models work on both household current and have a battery back-up system for protection during power outages. Carbon monoxide detectors should be installed near sleeping areas and near the homes heating source. How do I know if I am suffering from Carbon Monoxide poisoning? Carbon monoxide poisoning is difficult to diagnose. Because its symptoms are similar to other common diseases such as the flu, carbon monoxide is often called "The Great Imitator." Symptoms of low level CO poisoning can include headaches, fatigue, nausea, dizzy spells, and confusion. There are however, a few hints that can help to identify carbon monoxide poisoning in your home: 1. Are other members of the household feeling ill as well? 2. Do you fell better when you are away from home for a period of time? If so, you may be suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning. To be sure, see a physician and request a carboxyhemoglobin test. This will determine the percentage of carbon monoxide present in you blood. What do I do if my carbon monoxide detector goes off? Get out of the house immediately. Have a plan that includes a pre-designated meeting place so that all family members can be accounted for. (Most fatalities occur when people re-enter the home to search for loved ones or pets.) Call the fire department from a neighbor's phone or cell phone outside the home. Do not re-enter until the fire department determines it is safe to do so. Have all sources of CO checked by a certified technician immediately. There, homeowners enjoy the beauty of the environment but face the very real danger of wildfire. Wildfires often begin unnoticed. They spread quickly, igniting brush, trees and homes. Reduce your risk by preparing now--before wildfire strikes. Meet with your family to decide what to do and where to go if wildfires threaten your area. Follow the steps listed in this brochure to protect your family, home and property. Practice wildfire safety People start most wildfiresfind out how you can promote and practice wildfire safety. " Contact your local fire department, health department or forestry office for information on fire laws. Make sure that fire vehicles can get to your home. Clearly mark all driveway entrances and display your name and address. " Report hazardous conditions that could cause a wildfire. " Teach children about fire safety. Keep matches out of their reach. " Post fire emergency telephone numbers. " Plan several escape routes away from your home--by car and by foot. " Talk to your neighbors about wildfire safety. Plan how the neighborhood could work together after a wildfire. Make a list of your neighbors' skills such as medical and technical. Consider how you could help neighbors who have special needs such as elderly or disabled persons. Make plans to take care of children who may be on their own if parents can't get home. Protect Your Home " Regularly clean roof and gutters. " Inspect chimneys at least twice a year. Clean them at least once a year. Keep the dampers in good working order. Equip chimneys and stovepipes with a spark arrester that meets the requirements of National Fire Protection Association Code 211. (Contact your local fire department for exact specifications.) " Use 1/2-inch mesh screen beneath porches, decks, floor areas and the home itself. Also, screen openings to floors, roof and attic. " Install a smoke detector on each level of your home, especially near bedrooms; test monthly and change the batteries two times each year. " Teach each family member how to use the fire extinguisher (ABC type) and show them where it's kept. " Keep a ladder that will reach the roof. " Consider installing protective shutters or heavy fire-resistant drapes. " Keep handy household items that can be used as fire tools: a rake, axe, handsaw or chainsaw, bucket and shovel. Before wildfire threatens Design and landscape your home with wildfire safety in mind. Select materials and plants that can help contain fire rather than fuel it. Use fire resistant or non-combustible materials on the roof and exterior structure of the dwelling. Or treat wood or combustible material used in roofs, siding, decking or trim with UL-approved fire-retardant chemicals. Plant fire-resistant shrubs and trees. For example, hardwood trees are less flammable than pine, evergreen, eucalyptus or fir trees. Create a 30 to 100 foot safety zone around your home. Within this area, you can take steps to reduce potential exposure to flames and radiant heat. Homes built in pine forests should have a minimum safety zone of 100 feet. If your home sits on a steep slope, standard protective measures may not suffice. Contact your local fire department or forestry office for additional information. " Rake leaves, dead limbs and twigs. Clear all flammable vegetation. " Remove leaves and rubbish from under structures. " Thin a 15-foot space between tree crowns, and remove limbs within 15 feet of the ground. " Remove dead branches that extend over the roof. " Prune tree branches and shrubs within 15 feet of a stovepipe or chimney outlet. " Ask the power company to clear branches from powerlines. " Remove vines from the walls of the home. " Mow grass regularly. " Clear a 10-foot area around propane tanks and the barbecue. Place a screen over the grill--use non-flammable material with mesh no coarser than one-quarter inch. " Regularly dispose of newspapers and rubbish at an approved site. Follow local burning regulations. " Place stove, fireplace and grill ashes in a metal bucket, soak in water for two days, then bury the cold ashes in mineral soil. " Store gasoline, oily rags and other flammable materials in approved safety cans. Place cans in a safe location away from the base of buildings. " Stack firewood at least 100 feet away and uphill from your home. Clear combustible material within 20 feet. Use only UL-approved woodburning devices. Plan Your Water Needs " Identify and maintain an adequate outside water source such as a small pond, cistern, well, swimming pool or hydrant. " Have a garden hose that is long enough to reach any area of the home and other structures on the property. " Install freeze-proof exterior water outlets on at least two sides of the home and near other structures on the property. Install additional outlets at least 50 feet from the home. " Consider obtaining a portable gasoline powered pump in case electrical power is cut off. when wildfire threatens If you are warned that a wildfire is threatening your area, listen to your battery-operated radio for reports and evacuation information. Follow the instructions of local officials. " Back you car into the garage or park it in an open space facing the direction of escape. Shut doors and roll up windows. Leave the key in the ignition. Close garage windows and doors, but leave them unlocked. Disconnect automatic garage door openers. " Confine pets to one room. Make plans to care for your pets in case you must evacuate. " Arrange temporary housing at a friend or relative's home outside the threatened area. If advised to evacuate, do so immediately. " Wear protective clothing--sturdy shoes, cotton or woolen clothing, long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, gloves and a handkerchief to protect your face. " Take your Disaster Supplies Kit. " Lock your home. " Tell someone when you left and where you are going. " Choose a route away from fire hazards. Watch for changes in the speed and direction of fire and smoke. If you're sure you have time, take steps to protect your home: Inside: " Close windows, vents, doors, venetian blinds or non-combustible window coverings and heavy drapes. Remove lightweight curtains. " Shut off gas at the meter. Turn off pilot lights. " Open fireplace damper. Close fireplace screens. " Move flammable furniture into the center of the home away from windows and sliding-glass doors. " Turn on a light in each room to increase the visibility of your home in heavy smoke. Outside: " Seal attic and ground vents with pre-cut plywood or commercial seals. " Turn off propane tanks. " Place combustible patio furniture inside. " Connect the garden hose to outside taps. " Set up the portable gasoline-powered pump. " Place lawn sprinklers on the roof and near above-ground fuel tanks. Wet the roof. " Wet or remove shrubs within 15 feet of the home.
